Getting Your Vehicle Winter Ready in Truro, NS

As we peer out our windows, we see beautiful colours of fall, the reds, greens, oranges, and almost everything in between. The rain has started to fall frequently in some areas, leaving the grass damp and roads slick. Temperatures have also begun to drop, and a heavier jacket is needed. As Canadians, we know that winter is just around the corner and colder, harsher conditions are on the way. Winter brings with it its own set of challenges by creating snow and ice-packed roads. At Truro Mitsubishi, we are excited to offer you some tips in getting your vehicle ready for the winter. Residents of Colchester County, Nova Scotia, Hants County, Nova Scotia, Pictou County, Nova Scotia and Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, understand that winters can be quite treacherous in Nova Scotia, so being prepared is vital.

10 Ways to Winterize Your Vehicle

10. Switch to Winter Tires

Whenever temperatures fall below 7 degrees, it is important to change over to winter tires. As the rubber compound which is used to manufacture winter tires is different than summer and all-seasons. A softer compound will be able to handle colder temperatures and not contract as much. Also, winter tires have a different tread pattern that is meant to cut through ice and snow. You can find winter tires in Nova Scotia at our fully stocked parts centre.

9. Get an Oil Change

If you have not had a recent oil change, now is a good idea to get one. There are specific types of oils that are recommended for winter; they usually have less viscosity (thinner).

8. Check your Battery

A typical battery lasts approximately four years. It is a good idea to have your battery tested because no one wants to be left in the cold with a dead battery.

7. Replace Wiper Blades

As all rubber products, they tend to break down over time, especially due to wear and tear. There are also specific wiper blades that perform better in the winter.

6. Top up you Washer Fluid

Depending on what you use as fluid in your reservoir, this is a good time to change it. As there are specific windshield washer fluids that are rated to -40 degrees.

5. Block Heaters

If your vehicle is equipped with a block heater, make sure that it is functional

4. Coolant Check

Bring your vehicle to our service centre in Nova Scotia to have your coolant inspected and make sure the ratio is correct for the winter season.

3. Winter Floor Mats

The use of winter floor mats helps keep the inside of your vehicle cleaner throughout the winter. Preventing snow, ice, and salt to build up in the wrong places.

2. Get a Tune Up

Make sure to get a general fall tune-up. Have a certified technician check your filters, hoses, lights, brakes, belts, etc.

1. Emergency Kit

Always have an emergency kit in your vehicle as emergencies do happen.
