2021 Mitsubishi Outlander vs 2021 Toyota Highlander

Are you searching for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander in the Truro, Nova Scotia area? If so, Truro Mitsubishi is happy to show you our new Mitsubishi inventory. We are your preferred Mitsubishi dealership, serving the surrounding areas of Colchester County, Hants County, Pictou County and Cumberland County. To help you choose between the Outlander and its top rival, the 2021 Toyota Highlander. Let's dive into what makes the Outlander different from the Highlander and why the Outlander might be a better fit for you.

Engine and Transmission Comparisons

What's under the hood of the Outlander? The ES, LE, and SE trim come powered by a standard 2.0-L 4-cylinder engine that generates 248 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. It comes paired up with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), which delivers power to the front wheels. All-wheel drive (AWD), however, is available if you prefer it. On the line-topping GT, you get a beefed-up 2.4-L 4-cylinder engine that makes 168 horsepower and 167 lb-ft of torque. That engine does come with standard AWD. The 2021 Toyota Highlander offers a 3.5-L V6 engine that creates 295 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque and comes paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission that delivers power to the front wheels. Any trim can come equipped with All-Wheel-Drive.

Fuel Consumption

As far as fuel economy goes, you can expect an EPA estimated 9.5 L/km combined on the Outlander's GT. Of course, the base engine with FWD does better, getting 9.0 L/km combined. You can get somewhere around 10.2 L/km on the Highlander combined on the AWD variants and 9.8 L/km combined on the FWD models. The Outlander has a fuel tank of almost 63 litres, while the Highlander's is nearly 68 litres.

Interior and Exterior Features

The Outlander interior features a host of standard safety features. Forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and automatic high beams come standard on the base trim. Upgrading to the SE will add a blind-spot monitoring system with a rear cross-traffic alert, which will warn if a vehicle is in your blind spot when trying to change lanes or back up. The Highlander has Toyota's Safety Sense 2.0 bundle equipped as standard, which gives all trim levels forward collision mitigation, a traffic sign reader, lane trace assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Upgrading to the second trim level gets you blind-spot monitoring, and the line-topping trim comes with a surround-view camera.

The standard suspension on the Outlander is composed of a four-wheel independent suspension with front and rear stabilizer bars. The Highlander's suspension is a similar design, although you do get a sportier option. A sport-tuned suspension is available on the Highlander if you upgrade to the new XSE trim level. Handling on the Outlander can take on a series of corners at a moderate rate of speed without much drama.

The Highlander has body roll under control, but you will still feel this vehicle's size. Passenger space in the first two rows of the Outlander is comfortable, and children can fit into the third row - and, yes, you get a total seating capacity of seven. The Highlander likewise seats seven, but the third row is one of the smallest you will find in this segment. Even two children will have a tight squeeze. Cargo space is also short on the Highlander, with just 16.6 cubic feet behind the third row. The Outlander gives you more to work with; therefore, there are 21.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, and when you fold the second row down, you can max that number out to 49.5 cubes.
